What is a fancy or VIP vehicle number?
A fancy or VIP registration number is a personalised, easy-to-remember plate assigned to your car or bike through an official auction process conducted by your state’s Regional Transport Office (RTO). These numbers typically follow patterns like repeated digits (0001, 1111, 9999), mirror combinations (1221, 7887), birth dates (1995, 0101), lucky numbers (0786, 0007), or short sequences that are simple to recall.
Unlike regular plates assigned at random, fancy numbers require a separate application and come at a premium fee — which varies widely by state and the desirability of the number chosen.
Personal identity
Your vehicle feels uniquely yours — tied to your birth year, initials, or lucky number.
Resale value
Sought-after numbers like 0001 or 9999 often add perceived premium to a vehicle at resale.
Brand & business
Business owners use number plates tied to their brand identity or phone numbers.
Auspicious belief
Numerology plays a big role — many buyers seek numbers aligned with their birth date or ank shastra.
How to book a fancy number online
The process is straightforward through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Vahan portal. After registering your vehicle, navigate to the “fancy number” section, select your preferred number from the available list for your RTO series, and pay the requisite fee online. Once payment is confirmed and your application is approved, the number is reserved for your vehicle. Physical HSRP plates with the chosen number are then issued through authorised vendors.
Keep in mind that the most popular numbers go to the highest bidder through a live auction process, so popular combinations like 0786, 1000, or 5555 can attract bids several times above the base reserve price.
